Local News: Blood Services calls on black community to roll up
Adom Jeffers rolled up his
sleeve and donated blood
to help raise awareness for
the need for blood within
black communities.
“My godbrother has
sickle cell (disease) ... so I
definitely wanted to do
what I can,” he said as he
gave blood for the first
time.
Sickle cell disease is an
inherited disorder affecting
the normal function of red
blood cells, predominantly
affecting black people. It
causes anemia, jaundice,
kidney and spleen damage,
and strokes.
Canadian Blood Services,
the Sickle Cell Association
of Ontario and the U
of T Black Student Association
are stepping up a
campaign during Black
History Month urging African-
Canadian communities
to donate.
