Ryerson University is pleased to present, in concert with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund (Canada) (NMCF Canada), a special Tribute to Nelson Mandela gala-film screening. On October 17, 2007, the University will host an evening of celebration to mark the achievements of the courageous South African leader and the Children’s Fund he founded. The centrepiece of the event is the Canadian premiere of the Academy Award-nominated do*****entary Mandela: Son of Africa, Father of a Nation at 8:00 p.m., at the Ryerson Theatre

A captivating view of the indomitable spirit of one of the world’s most fascinating figures, Mandela: Son of Africa, Father of a Nation follows Nelson Mandela from his early days and tribal education to his election as South Africa’s first democratically elected president. Providing insights into his early life, this full-length do*****entary takes viewers through Mandela’s childhood, adolescence, legal career and personal life. Mandela: Son of Africa, Father of a Nation is an absorbing look at the life, hardships and fortitude of Mandela the leader, while never forgetting the engaging and charismatic spirit of Mandela the man. The do*****entary captures Mandela’s three priorities and indeed the spirit of the tribute evening: the love of children; the belief in freedom and one person, one vote; and the ideal of forgiveness and reconciliation.

"We were honoured to welcome Dr. Mandela and his wife Graça Machel on campus to receive their honorary degrees from Ryerson University in 2001," said Sheldon Levy, President, Ryerson University. "It is a privilege to host this tribute evening, and to support the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. The future of our country and our world depends on our children: their freedom, their health and their education."

"The extraordinary life of Nelson Mandela is an inspiration to the people of the world. At the age of 89, he continues his volunteer work in support of the Children's Fund that bears his name. We are delighted to share in this Tribute to Nelson Mandela with Ryerson University and raise funds for vulnerable children and youth in South Africa," said Gordon Cressy, President NMCF (Canada).

Hosted by journalist and Ryerson alumna, Suhana Meharchand, the evening will feature the Honorary Patron Lincoln M. Alexander and special guest Sibongile Mkhabela (Bongi), the CEO of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, based in South Africa Bongi, who was imprisoned for protesting the apartheid government as Mandela was, will share with the audience first-hand stories of children in South Africa and the Fund’s mission to aid them. Each person in attendance will receive a free box set including the DVD of the film Mandela: Son of Africa, Father of a Nation.

Tickets for the film screening of Mandela: Son of Africa, Father of a Nation are $50 and can be purchased through www.ticketweb.ca. All proceeds go to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund (Canada).

This fundraising event is generously supported by the Canadian Auto Workers union, the Toronto Star, BMO Financial Group, Bombardier, South African Airways, Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario, and Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association.
