Evening to inspire right attitude

The moment fashion designer David Spencer heard Maya Angelou recite her poem, Phenomenal Woman, his life changed. He knew he wanted his creations to make women feel like the woman in the poem — beautiful and confident.

Although this moment of inspiration happened decades ago, it lead him to successfully create a modest fashion empire in Toronto that focuses on leather-crafted fashions like hats, belts and purses as well as his signature women’s wear.

In an effort to experience the same kind of change that happened in him years ago, Spencer is taking a group of individuals for an evening with the legendary Maya Angelou at Roy Thomson Hall tomorrow at 7:30.

Included in the group are at-risk youths and at-risk women. He says some of the kids he will be taking have been victims of abuse, experienced life on the streets, or encountered barriers in their lives that prevent them from reaching their full potential.

“The mission of the David Spencer Inspired Evening is to introduce and expose people to environments where they can be empowered to find their inner strength,” he says. “If people are exposed to someone, who overcame their own diversities, it will make them think, ‘if they can do it, I can do it.’”
