Local News: Police seek woman, minority recruits Black Habits Articles Trying to keep up with rapid growth and changes in ethnic demographics, police forces across the GTA are desperate for new officers, especially women and visible minorities. That’s caused competition among forces

“Everyone is vying for the same applicant pool in terms of women, visible minorities, Aboriginal, disabled,” says Sgt. Terry James, a recruiter for Toronto Police Service.

Candidates often don’t apply to only one police force. “It becomes a competitive process,” says Staff Sgt. Scott Burns of Durham Regional Police Service.

Whether in the 905 regions or the City of Toronto, many police are baby boomers edging towards retirement. At the same time, the communities they work for are growing rapidly.

York Region is increasing by about 35,000 people a year, says Insp. Stan Colley, who heads up professional development for York Regional Police. “We’re trying to keep up.”
