African News: Race day fashion in South Africa Black Habits Articles High society gathered Saturday for the J&B Met horse race, the highlight of the racing season and an annual fashion extravaganza highlighting the self-confidence of the new black middle class.

Thousands in beautifully cut outfits thronged the race course in the Cape Town suburb of Kenilworth. More eyes focused on the competition for Most Elegant Couple than on the purebreds thundering down the track in 10 afternoon races.

Simone Heradin, a project manager for an art company, said she was proud to be part of the growing ranks of Buppies — black upwardly mobile professionals.

Many of the invited guests were more interested in the after-race parties than the horse races. “I don’t bet,” declared Basetsana Kumalo, who was Miss South Africa in 1994. “I’m just here to mingle and to have a good time.” - The Associated Press
