Local News: AFRICAN CANADIAN CANDIDATES HOST FEDERAL ELECTION FORUM Black Habits Articles Major parties field only four Black candidates in all of Ontario.

TORONTO (January 4, 2006)—As the GTA’s African Canadian community continues the battle against gun violence and under-representation, the region’s three Black candidates seek to increase the community’s presence on Parliament Hill. Eager to encourage community participation, Rochelle Carnegie, Kevin Modeste and Dr. Sandra Romano Anthony will be guests at the First Fridays networking session on Friday January 6, 2006 at 7 p.m. All are encouraged to attend the open session at Opal Dining Lounge, located at 472 Queen Street West.

“There is a great deal at stake for our community and our youth in this campaign,” said Dr. Romano Anthony, the NDP candidate in Toronto’s York West Riding. “We’re calling on you to join us by getting active and getting involved.”

Despite the problems of 2005 and the community’s widely recognized need for increased political participation, the current campaign has been marked by an actual decrease in Black candidates throughout the province. In Ontario’s 106 ridings, the three major parties have fielded only four African Canadian candidates and all four are running with the NDP.

“With all of the issues facing our community, it’s imperative that we are difference-makers on all stages, including the House of Commons.” said Carnegie, the NDP candidate in Toronto’s Willowdale riding.

“The struggles we faced in 2005 must be fought on multiple fronts,” said Modeste, running in Ajax-Pickering. “We can’t leave community organizations to wage this battle alone. Let’s be sure that our voices are clearly heard on January 23.”

Edwin Laryea, the other African Canadian candidate, is running in Kitchener-Waterloo.
