Entertainment: Mary J. Blige Takes On The Role Of Legendary Singer Nina Simone In Film Black Habits Articles Mary J. Blige is finally flexing her star muscle and using it in the world of acting. The singer has been given the starring role in an upcoming, yet-to-be-titled film that will focus on the rise of the late jazz/soul singer Nina Simone, according to MTV News.

The MTV Films/ Paramount Pictures project will follow Simone's rise to fame, which started in the '60s, where she cranked out such hits as "Mississippi Goddam" and "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black." The singer eventually retired in France in the '70s and passed in 2003.

According to MTV, the film will be produced by Interscope head, Jimmy Iovine, Lauren Lloyd, Gene Kirkwood and Eminem's manager, Paul Rosenberg. A director has not been named yet, but the screenplay will be penned by television writer Cynthia Mort ("Will & Grace," "Roseanne").

In addition to the film, Blige is prepping the release of her seventh album, The Breakthrough. The 14-track album will include songs produced by Brian Michael Cox, Rodney Jerkins, the Black Eyed Peas' Will I Am, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Dre & Vidal, Johnta Austin and Raphael Saadiq among others.

The Breakthrough is slated for release December 20.
